Los medios más grandes se resistían a confirmarla hasta tener una versión oficial, entre ellos CNN, que hasta más de una hora después mantuvo la información de queJackson "estaba en coma".
TMZ, es el pequeño medio digital que regó la noticia como pólvora en redes como el Twitter, Facebook y blogs hasta que la misma web confirmó el fallecimiento media hora más tarde. Los grandes medios como la CNN, The 'New York Times', 'Los Angeles Times'-e incluso las agencias- que no quisieron quedarse atrás no tuvieron más remedio que citar a la web como fuente. El primer gran medio que le dio crédito a TMZ fue SkyNews.com, que titulaba que Michael Jackson había muerto y citaba al portal del espectáculo.
Muchos fans mantenían la esperanza de que su ídolo siguiera con vida. Hasta que Los Ángeles Times, primero, y después el Washington Post, confirmaron el deceso, citando a fuentes médicas y no aTMZ.

Twitter también ha sufrido los problemas del efecto dominó. La enciclopedia Wikipedia ya ha actualizado la biografía del artista con la fecha de su muerte y con un epígrafe especial.
